The video for this project is as hot as the summertime! But that was the easy part of this project. Putting iconic Mexican characters into popsicles was the challenge. And we love a good challenge, so this is how it all got started..
A friend of Stewart’s called us with some very creative ideas. He told us the client was Encanto Pops and handed over a doodle on a piece of scrap paper that read, “I want to shoot this,” and the fun began.
Many times, a job starts with a tight comp (example) using stock photos to illustrate the idea. This time, we were presented with a scribble of a stick-person Mariachi frozen in a Popsicle. Our client's creativity was infectious, though, and we were immediately on board.
Our casting call was filled with mustache-wearing, guitar-toting dudes, and Day of the Dead candidates willing to pose in a kiddie pool of milk on the concrete floor of a garage in mid-January. This is the kind of wild, weird stuff we love to shoot.
Photographing the popsicles was simple. We quickly figured out which colors worked best and how to light them to capture just the right texture. Then we had to shoot the talent, half in and half out of the milk; and that was more of a challenge than we thought it would be. It was tricky to elevate certain areas of their bodies while keeping other parts submerged, and it required some on-set innovation to get it just right. The talent all deserved kudos for patiently fermenting in the milk in contorted body positions while we got the shoots we needed. With the raw photographs in hand, our retouchers helped bring our vision to life.
The Encanto Pops campaign was special because we were able to put our heads together with an agency and create something completely unique — a figment of our collective imaginations.
Over the years in the commercial video and photography business, our typical challenges revolve around orchestrating production details. But on this project, we had the opportunity to be a part of something truly creative and produce truly striking images that will stick with everyone who sees them.
Our second campaign for Encanto Pops took a slightly different direction. In keeping with Guillermo’s out-of-the-box ideas, we created a steamy TV spot based on the idea that these Popsicles can cool down even the hottest moments. You be the judge...
From live action to still imagery or a combo of both, let us show you how we can present your concept in the best light.
